A courageous train steward, Samir Zitouni, has reached a significant recovery milestone after waking up in the hospital following a mass stabbing incident near Huntingdon. Samir, aged 48, was on duty with the LNER catering crew on the Doncaster to London King’s Cross service when the attack occurred on November 1. His brave actions during the incident were commended by the British Transport Police as heroic.
Following the knife attack, Samir was hospitalized at Cambridge’s Addenbrooke Hospital with severe injuries, along with 10 others who were also injured on the LNER service. Despite being in critical condition initially, there was a positive development when Samir briefly regained consciousness and interacted with his wife, signaling progress in his recovery journey.
A GoFundMe campaign was set up to support Samir’s long-term care, which has successfully raised 90% of its £70,000 target as of Tuesday evening. The initiative aims to assist Samir and his family as he continues to recuperate. The campaign organizer, Gemma Royce, shared the heartening news of Samir’s awakening, emphasizing the ongoing need for support and well wishes for his recovery.
Described as displaying remarkable courage during the harrowing attack, Samir put his life at risk to protect others, including a 14-year-old girl, earning widespread praise for his selfless actions. The GoFundMe page seeks to alleviate the financial burden on Samir’s family during this challenging period and enable them to focus on his recovery process.
The suspect, Anthony Williams, aged 32 and of no fixed abode, faces charges of attempted murder concerning 10 individuals on the train. He appeared before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody until December 1. Additionally, Williams is implicated in another train assault earlier that day in east London, prompting a broader investigation into potential links to other knife-related incidents.
