The Israeli government has issued a warning to Hamas regarding the use of kites by Palestinians, threatening to escalate “targeted strikes” on Gaza if the kite launches towards Israel continue. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on social media platform X, emphasized the need to address the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites originating from the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu, along with Defence Minister Israel Katz and other high-ranking officials, discussed the situation and conveyed that Israel will take action to increase targeted strikes on those responsible for the launches if they persist.
Netanyahu underlined that Israel will not tolerate any threats from Hamas or other entities in Gaza that jeopardize the safety of Israeli communities. Despite the tensions, for individuals like 13-year-old Omar Halawa from Khan Younis, flying kites serves as a source of solace amid the conflict. Omar expressed that flying kites is a means to find joy in a challenging environment and emphasized that they are not engaged in violence but seek a peaceful existence.
Preceding the recent conflict, Israel reported incidents of burning kites and balloons from Gaza causing fires and damage. Following the warning from Netanyahu, Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including children, prompting concerns and calls for de-escalation. Hamas condemned Israel’s actions as part of a continued aggression against Palestinians, reiterating the need for international intervention to uphold a genuine ceasefire.
Omar, now apprehensive about flying kites due to the potential danger, expressed his fear of unintended consequences. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the importance of simple joys like kite-flying for children amid the challenging circumstances. Concerns persist about potential restrictions on children’s activities due to security concerns raised by Israel, leading to a shift in kite-flying locations towards their tents.
