A recent revelation indicates that the key suspect in the Madeleine McCann case has been residing covertly in a secluded forest hideout after being forced out of town by enraged locals. Christian Brueckner, a convicted sex offender, was released from prison in September following a seven-year sentence for assaulting a 72-year-old woman in Portugal’s Algarve region, where Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007.
German prosecutors identified the 48-year-old as the prime suspect in Madeleine’s case in June 2020, but failed to link him to the crime before his release. Brueckner, labeled homeless post-release, faced backlash in a small German town, prompting an uproar among residents who staged a public outcry leading to an emergency town hall meeting.
Shortly after, police presence escalated around Brueckner’s residence, and he subsequently relocated to various hotels before settling in a cramped tent, which now serves as his temporary abode as he roams northern Germany’s forests and parks.
In an unexpected turn of events, Brueckner initiated a controversial GoFundMe campaign seeking €26,000 (£22,860) to facilitate his departure from Germany, citing a desire to escape constant suspicion and scrutiny. The campaign outlines specific amounts for various expenses, including airport coffee and a one-way ticket to a jurisdiction beyond the reach of Germany’s law enforcement.
The Higher Regional Court of Celle recently lifted travel restrictions imposed on Brueckner, allowing him freedom of movement within Germany, a decision that has raised concerns among investigators involved in the ongoing Madeleine McCann investigation, fearing it may impede their efforts should Brueckner attempt to flee the country.
