Sky Q, a popular TV device in the UK for over a decade, has gained recognition for its ability to store content on its internal hard drive. Despite its longevity, a new competitor has emerged in the form of the Manhattan S4-R Freesat 4K TV Recorder.
This new set-top box from Manhattan functions similarly to Sky Q, utilizing a dish for content delivery and offering storage for recordings. Users can enjoy a comprehensive interactive TV guide and the convenience of pausing live TV. The standout feature of the Manhattan S4-R is its lack of subscription fees, providing access to over 100 free TV and radio channels without the need for additional payments.
Similar to Sky Q, the S4-R can record multiple channels simultaneously and comes with a 500GB hard drive, capable of storing approximately 300 hours of content. Larger 1TB and 2TB versions are on the horizon for those requiring more storage space. The device also supports live TV controls such as pausing and rewinding broadcasts, mirroring Sky’s functionality.
With a user-friendly interface, search capabilities, and access to a vast library of on-demand content through various apps including BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5, the Manhattan S4-R aims to provide a seamless viewing experience. Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted the enhanced recording capabilities of the S4-R, allowing up to four programs to be recorded simultaneously, doubling the previous limit.
Positioned as a compelling alternative to subscription-based TV services, the Manhattan S4-R offers flexibility, choice, and cost-saving benefits. The device is set to launch this month and will be available at retailers like Currys, John Lewis, Argos, and Richer Sounds. Pricing for the S4-R starts at £219.99 for the 500GB model, with the 1TB version priced at £249.99 in May and the 2TB variant at £279.99 in June.
