Markham is gearing up for a thrilling weekend as it welcomes the NTT IndyCar Series for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. This marks the first time the race is being held outside Toronto, featuring a brand-new track layout covering 3.52 kilometers with 12 turns. The track will traverse Unionville GO station grounds, the York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre.
To reach the event venue, attendees are recommended to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407, with parking available west of the grounds. Metrolinx has expanded Stouffville Line services for easy access. Additional trips from Union Station to Unionville GO and Burlington GO to Union Station have been scheduled.
Residents have endured months of track construction impacts, including limited parking at Unionville GO and road repaving. Road closures affecting Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard will persist until Monday morning, with some closures extending until August 27 for track dismantling.
The highlight of the event is the IndyCar race on Sunday, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points and favored to win. Other notable contenders include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also participate in support series races.
Drivers have noted the unique challenges of the Markham track, featuring newly paved, smooth roads and distinct elevation changes. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are available on the event website, while Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions are free on Fan Friday, with donations encouraged for Make-A-Wish Canada.
