A woman bravely rushed into her burning house to rescue her son, cats, and bearded dragons after an arson attack by Carl Dawe. Dawe, intoxicated and enraged, set fire to a caravan outside the property, leading to flames spreading to three houses and a vehicle.
The incident resulted in a woman sustaining burns to her face, neck, and hand, potentially leaving her permanently scarred. Dawe later admitted to losing control during what he described as a moment of madness. The court heard that Dawe was in a relationship but was also having an affair with Jacqueline Spencer, causing tension due to her friendship with a neighbor, Alison Hunt.
On the night of the incident, Dawe and Ms. Spencer had an argument at her residence, which escalated due to a disagreement about a fridge freezer. Dawe later vandalized Ms. Spencer’s caravan and then returned to set it on fire, causing extensive damage. The fire spread, damaging neighboring homes and a parked car.
Ms. Spencer heroically re-entered her burning house to rescue her son and pets, suffering burns in the process. The blaze also affected Ms. Hunt, who had recently purchased the caravan for family holidays, leaving her and her children traumatized by the events.
Dawe, with a history of prior convictions, expressed remorse for his actions, attributing them to a mental health breakdown and alcohol intoxication. Despite his remorse, he pleaded guilty to arson and criminal damage charges, receiving a sentence of four-and-a-half years in prison.
During sentencing, the judge emphasized the severity of Dawe’s actions, highlighting the significant harm caused to the victims and their families. The court acknowledged Dawe’s past struggles but held him accountable for the destructive consequences of his behavior.
