Next week’s investment summit in Toronto will feature Prime Minister Mark Carney showcasing 167 potential investment opportunities, including a floating LNG terminal on B.C.’s coast, a high-speed rail line between Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean. A 66-page “prospectus” obtained by CBC News outlines these projects, offering a detailed preview of the investment possibilities that Ottawa and Canadian business leaders aim to present at the summit.

The event, scheduled for September 14 and 15, is a collaboration between the prime minister, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board. It aims to attract deep-pocketed international investors and Canadian business leaders with the goal of generating $1 trillion in investments. Notably, invitations have been extended to major investment firms and sovereign wealth funds to increase capital influx amid trade disruptions and global uncertainties.

The investment opportunities are categorized into eleven conventional energy projects, thirty-one clean energy projects, sixty-three mining and metals projects, sixteen marine and port infrastructure projects, eleven power and utilities projects, ten digital technology projects, nineteen advanced manufacturing projects, and six transportation projects. Each project is detailed with information on its current status, required capital expenditure, and the type of investment needed for its realization.

Among the notable projects listed are a $57 billion US expansion of the Port of Churchill, a $44 billion investment in Nova Scotia’s Wind West offshore wind project, a proposed $35 billion West Coast oil pipeline from Alberta to B.C.’s coast, and the $28.5 billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project. Additionally, the document includes plans for a float glass manufacturing facility in Manitoba, expanded night-vision technology manufacturing capacity, and satellite technology for Earth observation.

Some projects are more advanced than others, with the Ksi Lisims project being “fully permitted and shovel ready,” while a graphite project in Saskatchewan is in the initial stages of assessment. The prospectus also highlights a $10.9 billion high-speed passenger rail line proposal connecting Calgary and Edmonton, a $35 billion oil pipeline project, and a $2.1 billion US expansion for South Bow’s Prairie Connector pipeline.

In the clean energy sector, proposals range from nuclear power generation in New Brunswick to carbon capture in Saskatchewan and wind power and green hydrogen in Newfoundland and Labrador. Canada’s expertise in artificial intelligence is emphasized, with investment opportunities in data centers, quantum computing, and other AI-related ventures. The government’s aim is to diversify energy exports and establish Canada as a leader in innovative technologies and sustainable infrastructure.
