Survivor Reveals Close Encounter with ‘Truck Stop Killer’

Must read

A woman who hitchhiked shared her harrowing encounter with a truck driver who was responsible for the torture and murder of 50 women. Vanessa Veselka, now 56, narrowly avoided becoming a victim of the infamous serial killer, Robert Ben Rhoades, who conducted his reign of terror in the US from 1975 to 1990.

Known as the ‘Truck Stop Killer’, Rhoades targeted vulnerable individuals like hitchhikers, sex workers, and young women at truck stops. In the summer of 1985, Vanessa accepted a ride from a trucker near Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, just after the discovery of a young hitchhiker’s body at a truck stop.

As they traveled to Ohio, Vanessa’s ride seemed uneventful as they enjoyed Diet Coke and listened to Bruce Springsteen. However, her journey took a dark turn when she was picked up by another trucker who turned out to be Rhoades.

Describing Rhoades as different from typical truckers with an exceptionally clean cab, Vanessa sensed something was amiss when his demeanor shifted after mentioning a dead girl and a mysterious group called the Laughing Death Society. Moments later, Rhoades brandished a hunting knife as they pulled over by a wooded area.

Despite trying to reason with him, Vanessa realized the danger she was in when Rhoades ominously instructed her to run. She fled into the woods as Rhoades drove away. It wasn’t until 2012, upon learning about Rhoades’ crimes, that Vanessa connected her chilling experience with the serial killer.

Rhoades’ atrocities included the abduction, rape, and murder of 14-year-old Regina Kay Walters, as well as the torture and killing of other victims in his truck rigged with handcuffs for restraining. His capture in 1990 followed an incident where a woman was found chained inside his truck, leading to his arrest and eventual life imprisonment without parole for Regina’s murder.

Vanessa, now a successful author, kept her ordeal secret for years until she learned the extent of Rhoades’ crimes, shedding light on the terrifying encounter that could have ended tragically for her.
