An iconic Christmas treat has made a grand comeback on supermarket shelves. Mince pies, a beloved tradition during the festive season in Britain, join the ranks of carol singers and quirky holiday sweaters.
With a plethora of choices available, the quest to find the ultimate mince pie beckons. I embarked on a tasting journey, sampling a variety of premium mince pies from major UK retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, and M&S. Each pie was evaluated based on taste, texture, filling-to-pastry ratio, appearance, and value for money.
The results were far from predictable, ranging from buttery pastry that melts in your mouth to overly sweet fillings that could pass for jam. Surprisingly, some budget brands exceeded expectations, while certain luxury options failed to live up to their premium status. So, who emerged victorious and who faltered under scrutiny? Here is my verdict on this year’s range of premium supermarket mince pies, ranked from best to worst.
Taking the crown is Tesco’s Finest Mince Pies. Featuring a buttery pastry and a generously-filled, perfectly-spiced mincemeat center, Tesco has crafted the ideal mince pie. Priced at £3 for a pack of six, they offer exceptional value for a premium product. Tesco’s mince pies embody their motto of ‘live well for less,’ delivering a festive delight for both taste buds and wallets.
Morrisons follows closely behind with a commendable mince pie this year. The pastry is crisp and light, with a delightful buttery taste, while the mincemeat strikes a harmonious balance between sweetness and spice. Priced at £3 per pack, it is a well-rounded choice that captures the essence of the holiday season.
Sainsbury’s mince pies secure the third position with their well-balanced mincemeat, rich in flavor and spice. However, the slightly dry and crumbly pastry detracts from the overall experience. Priced at £3.50 per pack, they offer decent flavor but fall short in texture compared to other contenders.
M&S, known for its premium quality, presents mince pies that feel overly indulgent this year. While the rich pastry and densely packed mincemeat boast an array of flavors, the overall effect feels excessive. Priced at £4 per pack, these mince pies may appeal to those seeking a lavish treat but lack the simplicity and warmth that define a satisfying mince pie.
Aldi’s mince pies, while acceptable, fail to make a lasting impression. The pastry lacks buttery richness and the mincemeat tastes somewhat artificial, leaning more towards sweetness than spice. Priced at £2.49 per pack, they serve as a budget-friendly option but are overshadowed by stronger contenders in the market.
On the other hand, Asda’s mince pies left much to be desired, being the only ones in the tasting that were unpalatable. The dense, flavorless pastry coupled with a synthetic aftertaste in the filling fell short of basic expectations for a supermarket mince pie. Despite their affordable price of £2.84 per pack, Asda’s mince pies failed to deliver a satisfactory eating experience.
