Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has decided to withdraw from the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury that has been hindering his performance since his victory at Wimbledon. Despite clinching his second consecutive title at the All England Club by defeating Alexander Zverev, Sinner opted out of the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments, essential warm-up events for the U.S. Open.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete when the main draw kicks off on August 30. Sinner revealed that despite extensive efforts by his team and medical staff, he requires more time to fully recover from his knee issue, which was evident during recent training sessions in Monte Carlo.
New York holds a special place in Sinner’s heart, and he was eagerly anticipating returning to the court to play in front of the enthusiastic fans. The reigning 2024 U.S. Open champion, Sinner suffered defeat at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz, who has been sidelined since April due to a right wrist injury, confirmed his readiness to compete in New York. The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a focal point in men’s tennis, with the duo contesting the last three Grand Slam finals in 2025. Alcaraz emerged victorious in their most recent encounter, securing a four-set win at the U.S. Open.
Sinner, boasting a remarkable record of 44 wins and 3 losses with six titles this year, faced a setback at the French Open after squandering a two-set lead in a challenging match against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Despite the setback, Sinner bounced back at Wimbledon, claiming his fifth Grand Slam title.
