A trial involving the killing of famous rapper Tupac Shakur commenced with jury selection for former gang member Duane (Keffe D) Davis, aged 63, who is accused of murder with a deadly weapon linked to a criminal gang in Shakur’s 1996 death. Davis, in custody since 2023, maintains his innocence. The trial, held in Las Vegas where the incident occurred, kicked off with jury selection and is expected to run for around a month.
During the trial, prosecutors will not allege that Davis directly carried out the shooting but will argue that he held a leadership role within the group that targeted Shakur on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas.
Shakur’s cousin, William Leslane, expressed doubts about the trial bringing true justice due to the long delay in seeking accountability. Leslane highlighted the lack of a thorough investigation at the time of the murder, stating that “justice is a little bit weakened” given the decades that have passed.
Davis, a former high-ranking member of the South Side Compton Crips gang, disclosed details about the shooting in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” which is expected to be a significant source of evidence in the case.
Tupac, a rising star in the rap scene, known for hits like “Dear Mama” and “California Love,” was associated with West Coast hip-hop and released several albums during his lifetime and posthumously.
The night of the shooting, Shakur and Marion (Suge) Knight, then-CEO of Death Row Records, were attacked in their vehicle after attending a boxing match in Las Vegas. Shakur sustained fatal injuries in the shooting, while Knight survived.
Davis recounted in his book that the attack on Shakur was driven by retaliation for an earlier altercation involving his nephew. He detailed the events leading up to the shooting and the aftermath, shedding light on his perspective at the time.
