U.S. President Donald Trump undertook a covert military journey from Turkey recently, necessitated by an Iranian assassination threat. The operation involved an intricate switch between aircraft using a catering truck to ensure the President’s safety.
Initially, the White House publicized that President Trump was flying on Air Force One from Turkey to Britain after attending a NATO summit. However, upon boarding the plane, Trump discreetly exited through the catering truck and transferred to another aircraft bound for Britain, as reported by the Washington Post citing undisclosed sources.
President Trump verified the sequence of events, acknowledging that the Secret Service and military advised him to switch planes due to a security threat, which he claimed did not intimidate him. He minimized the perceived risk to those remaining on the original plane, including White House officials, security personnel, and journalists.
During a press briefing following his return from an event in Ohio, Trump disclosed, “They wanted me to go on a different flight, different plane. I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats.”
The change in planes raised security concerns as Trump had initially used a newly renovated jet donated by Qatar for the NATO summit in Ankara but opted for an older Air Force One while departing, prompting questions about the security of the newer aircraft.
The trip to NATO marked the new plane’s first international voyage, arousing inquiries about its expenses and security, coinciding with escalating tensions with Iran, Turkey’s neighboring country.
Before leaving Ankara, Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he would utilize an older baby blue Air Force One plane for the journey to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, allowing U.S. service members stationed there to tour the new plane that halted at the same base.
Journalists accompanying Trump on what turned out to be a decoy older Air Force One were instructed to keep their window shades closed during the flight. As per reports, some White House staff were also misled into believing that the President was onboard.
Responding to queries about the closed window shades, Trump quipped, “probably on a dangerous flight,” and added, “But if I go, you go. Right?”
