“US Warns of Airspace Closures Amid Shutdown”

Must read

The US Secretary of Transportation has issued a warning about potential airspace closures if the government shutdown persists, leading to significant travel disruptions. Sean Duffy emphasized the possibility of mass flight delays, cancellations, and potential airspace closures due to a lack of air traffic controllers to effectively manage the situation.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, almost half of the major air traffic control facilities are facing staffing shortages as a result of the ongoing government shutdown. Approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers are currently working without pay, creating additional financial burdens on them.

Duffy highlighted the challenges faced by controllers who are taking on extra work to make ends meet during the prolonged period without salaries. He emphasized the importance of safety in the aviation system, stating that airspace restrictions would be implemented if deemed necessary to ensure safety standards are maintained.

The recent shutdown, which began on October 1, represents the first government closure in seven years due to disagreements over a spending bill between Republican and Democratic lawmakers. The halt in government services has left essential workers, including air traffic controllers, without pay, exacerbating an already strained situation with overtime hours and staff shortages.

Despite efforts to allocate funds from various programs, Duffy mentioned legal constraints preventing immediate payment to air traffic controllers. The inability to access additional funds highlights the challenges posed by the government shutdown and its impact on critical services.
