“35-Year-Old Woman Jailed for Faking Death to Evade Charges”

Must read

Amy McAuley, a 35-year-old woman, received a three-year prison sentence for faking her death to avoid criminal charges. She had been set to face trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in January 2023 for theft and attempted deception. McAuley used altered documents to secure a €10,000 loan from KBC Bank in 2018 and later tried to obtain another €5,000 loan. Her fake death notice was posted on RIP.ie almost a week after the supposed funeral date, stating she had peacefully passed away on December 26, 2022.

The notice detailed arrangements for her funeral at St. Mary’s Church in Lucan and cremation at Mount Jerome Crematorium, along with a request for donations to St. Vincent de Paul. McAuley’s trial was delayed after she falsely informed authorities of her death, leading to the issuance of two death certificates bearing different spellings of her name. Gardaí discovered her alive in mid-2023 when she was identified attending a wedding.

McAuley confessed to various charges, including submitting false documents and attempting to pervert the course of justice. She had a history of theft and deception, with prior convictions for similar offenses. The judge noted the deliberate nature of her actions, describing them as a planned deception involving breaches of trust. McAuley was sentenced to four years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended under strict conditions. She will be supervised by the Probation Service upon release.

Despite facing multiple charges and prior convictions, McAuley’s defense highlighted her remorse, acceptance of responsibility, and challenging personal circumstances, including health issues and mental health conditions. The defense emphasized her efforts to stabilize her life and expressed concerns about her future job prospects. The court considered both aggravating and mitigating factors before issuing the final sentence and supervision terms.
