A courageous police officer who responded to the Paris terror attacks recounted the harrowing moment he encountered ‘piles of bodies stacked on top of each other’ following the tragedy at the Bataclan theatre.
Tomorrow, France will observe the 10th anniversary of the ISIS attacks that claimed over 130 lives in Paris, with an official ceremony scheduled at the memorial garden in Place Saint-Gervais. Additionally, large screens will be set up at Place de la République for public participation in the commemoration.
Jérôme, a member of the elite BRI police force, vividly remembers the terrorist massacre at the theatre where 90 individuals lost their lives. He described the night as “beyond anything we could have imagined” even for seasoned officers.
During the attack, three gunmen stormed the venue at 9:40 pm, firing upon 1,500 concert attendees watching the Eagles of Death Metal band. Panic ensued as victims tried to escape, leading to a hostage situation that lasted until armed police resolved the siege the following morning at 12:58 am.
After the hostages fled, police discovered numerous deceased and injured individuals inside the auditorium. Amidst a chilling silence interrupted only by the cries of the wounded, officers were confronted with a ghastly sight under the bright house lights – a massive “pit” formed by layers of human bodies.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Jérôme, speaking to CNews, described the haunting scene he encountered, emphasizing the surreal nature of the tragedy he witnessed that surpassed their training and expectations.
In subsequent years, Jérôme maintained contact with some of the freed hostages, finding solace in knowing the positive paths they have taken post-attack. For many survivors, like Arthur Denouveaux, recovery has been a challenging journey marked by triggers that evoke memories of the traumatic event.
The commemorative ceremony in central Paris will feature a stage crafted by Thierry Reboul, director of Paris 2024 ceremonies, and a requiem composed by Victor Le Masne, the creator of the Olympic anthem.
