The World Nomad Games, a festival celebrating traditional nomadic sports and culture, are currently taking place in Kyrgyzstan. Athletes representing 104 countries are participating in the games, highlighting sports popular among the Turkic peoples of Central Asia. The event, which commenced earlier this week, will conclude on Sunday.
The 6th edition of the Games is being held at Kyrchyn Gorge, situated approximately 314 kilometers east of the capital city of Bishkek. Participants and spectators have gathered at the venue, showcasing their talents and engaging in various competitions.
Images captured at the event show participants parading with golden eagles, engaging in hunting bird competitions, and demonstrating skills in traditional equestrian disciplines like “tyiyn enmei” (pick up the coin). Riders from Kazakhstan are seen galloping at speed to pick up coins or a pouch from the ground while mounted.
Another traditional Central Asian sport showcased is “kok-boru” (gray wolf) or “buzkashi” (goat grabbing), where mounted players compete by throwing the carcass of a headless goat into a well to earn points. Archery competitions and demonstrations of craftsmanship skills are also part of the event, providing a diverse experience for both participants and spectators.
In addition to the competitive spirit, attendees are also enjoying local cuisines and admiring the craftsmanship on display, including wool spooling and pottery making. The Games offer a platform not only for sporting excellence but also for celebrating the rich cultural heritage of nomadic traditions.
