The Canadian women’s flag football team has secured a spot in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles after defeating Mexico 20-6 in a semifinal match at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship held in Duesseldorf, Germany. Canada’s success in the world championship ensures their participation in the upcoming Olympic Games debut of flag football. The top two countries from both the men’s and women’s championships will qualify for the 2028 Olympics, with the possibility of a third spot if the United States, as the host nation, reaches the final.
The Canadian women’s team will face the U.S. in the world championship final, with the winner securing the title and the Olympic berth. Meanwhile, Mexico and Britain will compete for the remaining women’s Olympic spot in the bronze-medal match.
Although the Canadian men’s team suffered a 41-36 defeat against Italy in the semifinals, they have a chance to secure an Olympic berth in the bronze-medal match against Mexico. The U.S. will play Italy for the men’s gold in the championship match.
In addition to the world championship, countries can also qualify for the Los Angeles Olympics through continental championships next year and a subsequent qualifying series. The Canadian teams showcased their strength in the quarterfinals, with the women defeating the U.S. 34-33 at the USA Football Summer Series.
