Toronto police have announced that a man has been formally accused following the arson attack on multiple vehicles at the residence of a Scarborough MP last week. Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, was taken into custody on Sunday and is facing charges including arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of flammable material, and violating probation terms. Additionally, authorities have confiscated a 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to be linked to the incident and are seeking information about its whereabouts before the alleged arson took place.

Law enforcement officials are also on the lookout for a second individual connected to the case. The arson incident targeted Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s property, located in the federal riding of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East. According to police reports, an unidentified suspect approached the vehicles in the driveway on August 27, poured an accelerant on two cars, set them ablaze, and fled the scene, causing a third vehicle to sustain damage from the flames.

Following the arrest, Zahid expressed gratitude to Toronto police and commented that while an arrest has been made and charges filed, the motive behind the arson remains unknown. She emphasized the need for more information before making further statements. Zahid, an MP since 2015, holds various parliamentary roles, including chairing the standing committee on science and research and serving as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.

The incident has garnered widespread condemnation from political figures, with Prime Minister Mark Carney denouncing it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” The investigation into the arson continues, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
