Yorkshire Family Sells Home for Global Adventure

Must read

A Yorkshire family constructed their own residence before selling it to embark on a global adventure, claiming to live luxuriously while reducing living costs by half. Danielle and Mike Booth, aged 36, initially considered traveling the world after a 2019 road trip in France with their children, Emmy (14) and Eli (10).

Inspired by their travels, Mike, a joiner, built a four-bedroom detached house from scratch in 2020 to fund their globetrotting dreams. Following the completion of the renovation project three years later, they began saving for their journey.

Over two years, the family meticulously saved money by selling belongings on platforms like Vinted before selling their house in April. On October 28, they commenced their one-way adventure by flying into Bangkok, Thailand, with plans to travel for at least a year on a budget of approximately £500 per week, supported by the house sale proceeds and Mike’s UK business income.

Former NHS worker Danielle mentioned that living in Thailand feels safer and more regal compared to the UK. In Bradford, their monthly expenses amounted to around £4,500. By relocating and cutting costs, they anticipate halving their expenses while providing their children with a diverse cultural experience.

Emphasizing the high UK living costs, Danielle highlighted concerns about crime rates and the education system, which influenced their decision to travel. Their 14-year-old daughter, Emmy, will continue math and English studies online, focusing on cultural learning and fitness during their journey across Chiang Mai, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Japan.

After a year of traveling, they plan to settle as a family, although the location remains undecided. While some questioned their choice to leave the UK, Danielle emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities and spending quality time with their children, a luxury they lacked back home.

The family expressed contentment with their current lifestyle, enjoying affordable street food and the absence of stress in their new environment. Despite missing proximity to family, they find satisfaction in their travel experiences and the quality time spent together.
